Job share - SECONDARY

Rosie Kelly-Smith

After I had my first child I made a flexible working request to return 0.8 and job share my Head of Year role with my deputy. This request was granted and worked successfully for 2.5 years including through covid! The arrangement allowed me an extra day at home with my little one and gave my deputy invaluable experience of acting as Head of Year one day a week; she later successfully applied for a Head of Year role within the same school and said she wouldn't have had the confidence to go for it had it not been for her experience of stepping up weekly. Equally, this arrangement essentially served as vital CPD, developing her skill set at no extra cost to the school. Just goes to show that flex work arrangements can work well at leadership level for all involved!

During my second maternity leave, I applied for a head of department role which had been advertised as full time. After meeting the headteacher during a visit to the school, I asked whether I would be considered for the role working 0.8. I returned to my previous school 0.8 after my first maternity leave and wanted to maintain this balance. The head agreed and I will be working 4 days a week.

I work part time Wednesday P2-4, Thursday and Friday. I got the pt contract when a permanent member of staff wanted pt. The school knew me and knew I wanted pt as I'd done a couple of temporary contracts so we began job sharing. I was 0.4 but upped since January to include Wednesday P2-4 to help fill some gaps when other colleagues left. I offered 2-4 only so I can still do school run and it was accepted. There are a number of flexible workers at the school, mostly those who started ft and dropped down. I believe you have to submit a flexible working request to do this. The SLT have set up a cover club, whereby if you need cover for a sports day, concert etc you can request it and someone in this club will cover you and you may then be used at a later point to cover them or someone else in the club.
